Dreams have always been taken seriously. By the ancient Egyptians, who built temples for dream incubation. By the Aztecs, who worked with sacred botanicals to deepen their nighttime journeys. This has extended to healers, shamans, and ordinary people across every culture who understood that what happens in sleep carries information worth paying attention to.

Dreams As A Practice
Dream work is not passive. It asks for preparation. You may want to create an atmosphere in a quiet space and set a clear intention before carefully choosing your botanical allies. Many dreamers approach sleep the way a meditator approaches sitting, with attention, ritual, and a sense that what follows is worth showing up for.
Scent plays a meaningful role in this preparation. Aromatic plants have been used in sleep and dreaming contexts across cultures for centuries, valued for the quality of presence and receptivity they invite. The aromas associated with dream herbs tend to be earthy and musky. They’re the kind of scent that signals the body to soften through the power of Mother Nature.
For those newer to these plant guides, our article on how to use essential oils is a helpful place to start. And for a full view of everything we carry in this space, our Lucid Dreaming Collection brings together our most intentional dream-focused offerings.
Essential Oils For Lucid Dreaming: Setting The Space
These are the oils to reach for in the hour or two before sleep, when you are preparing to settle the body and turning attention inward.
Blue Lotus Absolute
Blue lotus has been associated with dreaming, inner vision, and the more receptive states of consciousness across Egyptian, Indian, and Southeast Asian traditions for thousands of years. Its honey-sweet, richly floral aroma creates an atmosphere that many people describe as gently opening and present, a quality that suits the slow transition into sleep particularly well.
Our organically cultivated Blue Lotus Absolute is sourced from a family operation in Thailand. Its playful, sensual energy provides unique vibrations that open the heart and third eye, allowing your inner wisdom to shine. In terms of its aromatic notes, they’re quite unifying and centering, strengthening your connection to source. We recommend infusing it into a mister to enhance your room. For the full range of how we work with this remarkable flower, our Blue Lotus Collection highlights every form we carry.
Wormwood Essential Oil
Wormwood, known botanically as Artemisia absinthium, is the botanical companion and close relative of mugwort, with fruity, bitter, and dry herbaceous tones of pungent softness. It has long carried associations with the liminal and the mysterious, appearing in absinthe and other alcoholic beverages such as bitters, vermouth, and pelinkovac. Additionally, it has roots in ancient European herbalism and in various ceremonial contexts where the veil between waking and dreaming was intentionally thinned.
Our Wormwood Essential Oil is steam distilled and best used for short periods in a diffuser to purify the air. We at Essential Oil Wizardry think this is a particularly interesting essential oil for shifting energies in an environment, making it a great ingredient for more esoteric formulations. Further, Dr. Nick does not recommend ingesting this particular oil. It’s better suited for external and aromatic use.
Aromatherapy For Lucid Dreams And The Threshold Of Sleep
These are the oils and extracts most directly associated with the dream state itself: botanicals with deep traditional roots in oneirogenic practice, best applied immediately before sleep.
Mugwort Oil For Dreams
Mugwort may be the most widely recognized botanical ally for dreaming across world traditions. Known as the “dream sage” by the Chumash people of North America and used in Celtic ritual as well as certain Asian folk practices, Artemisia vulgaris carries a long lineage of association with vivid dreams, inner vision, and the expansion of the dream space. Its earthy, musky, and sweet-bitter aroma with a touch of camphoraceous euphoric intensity is instantly distinctive and deeply evocative of the night.
Our Mugwort Oil is organically steam distilled from Moroccan plant material. For dream work, it is best used aromatically rather than topically. A few drops diffused in the bedroom before sleep, added to bed linen during laundering, or placed on a cloth near your pillow are all equally wonderful ways to use them. Above all else, please keep in mind that mugwort is a powerful oil. Please approach it with respect and in small amounts.
Ultrasonic Mugwort Tincture
For those who want to work with mugwort in a more concentrated form, our Ultrasonic Mugwort Tincture is produced in-house using locally wild-harvested mugwort from Ashland, Oregon. It uses restructured, purified water as the solvent and is infused with our Ultrasonic Extraction Technology. Through vacuum distillation, we are able to produce a very concentrated Mugwort extract that contains essential oils, residual water, waxes, and plant alkaloids.
The result is an ultra-concentrated botanical extract that captures a wide array of the plant’s constituents in a way that steam distillation alone cannot. As such, this is a highly experimental product intended for experienced practitioners only. It is not recommended for internal use, and if used internally, should be kept under 5 drops. Applied topically to the bottoms of the feet or the wrists before sleep, many people find it deeply supportive of vivid and memorable clairvoyant dream experiences. Use with caution, start with a minimal amount, and do not use if pregnant, nursing, or if you have any serious concerns about your health.
Calea Z (Aztec Dream Herb)
Calea zacatechichi has been used in traditional Mesoamerican practice for centuries, particularly by the Chontal people of Oaxaca, who worked with it as a “teacher plant” to clarify and deepen the dream state. Our Ultrasonic Aztec Dream Herb Tincture is produced from pesticide-free, unsprayed leaves sourced from Mexico and extracted using vitalized, structured distilled water.
This is one of the more potent offerings in our collection and comes with significant safety considerations. It should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, is not recommended for those with kidney concerns, and may cause nausea in sensitive individuals. If you experience frequent nightmares, use at your own risk. This product is best approached on an unhurried evening when you can give the experience the space it deserves. It synergizes quite well with our Ultrasonic Mugwort Tincture for those who have already built familiarity with both botanicals individually.
Ready-Made Dream Essential Oil Blends
For those who want a complete, pre-formulated aromatherapy for lucid dreams practice without assembling individual botanicals, we offer two dedicated blends.
DreamScape
DreamScape is our flagship dream essential oil blend and one of the most beloved offerings in our entire collection. It brings together wildcrafted Buchu from South Africa, organic Lavender, organic Mugwort, wildcrafted Tagette, and Valerian Root, infused into fractionated coconut oil.
The blend smells like a dreamy, sweet cloud, inviting and soft, gently thinning the line between waking awareness and the dream space. Apply liberally to the feet, wrist points, below the nose, and the third eye directly before bedtime to aid with lucid dreaming. Dr. Nick reports recalling bright or vivid dreams approximately 40 to 60% of the time when using DreamScape this way. It synergizes beautifully with our Ultrasonic Mugwort Tincture for a deeper experience.
Dreamporting Elixir
The Dreamporting Elixir is a collaboration between Dr. Nick and Daniel Raphael of The Dreamporting Project, two wizard brothers whose shared devotion to alchemy, healing, and conscious living converged into a single offering. Formulated to support intentional inner work, this elixir is as at home in a meditation practice or ecstatic dance gathering as it is in a pre-sleep ritual. For more context on working with potent botanicals intentionally and responsibly, our Sustainable Partying guide offers a thoughtful framework.
Each drop carries vintage batches of ingredients that few formulas can claim, including 2009 Sandalwood, 2014 Blue Lotus Absolute, and 2014 Bourbon Rose, alchemized with Daniel’s bespoke essential oil matrix, superconducting colloidal and monoatomic minerals, and rare energetic essences imprinted through ancient hermetic principles. Dr. Nick calls it a micro-dose of heaven.
Applied as part of a clear intention-setting practice before sleep, meditation, movement, or any moment of inner inquiry, the Dreamporting Elixir supports consciousness elevation and a deeper sense of alignment between your inner world and outer life. Daniel’s framework describes it as working to re-code the energy fields that keep us separate from what we most wish to create.
Frequently Asked Questions About Essential Oils For Dream Work
What are the best essential oils for dream work?
What is a dream essential oil blend?
How do I use essential oils for lucid dreaming?
Is aromatherapy for lucid dreams effective?
Many people who work consistently with botanical aromas report more vivid dream recall and a heightened sense of awareness within the dream state over time. These experiences are deeply personal and vary considerably between individuals. The most meaningful results tend to come from regular practice rather than occasional use.
How should I store essential oils for dream work?
Keep all bottles tightly sealed and stored in a cool, dark location away from heat, light, and air. All of our products are best used within 2 to 5 years of purchase. Tinctures like the Ultrasonic Mugwort and Calea Z should be treated with the same care as other concentrated botanical extracts.
Can I use essential oils for dream work if I am pregnant?
It’s best to take precautions. For example, mugwort and wormwood oil should be strictly avoided during pregnancy. Please consult a qualified professional before using any of these botanicals if you have any health concerns.
Can I combine multiple dream botanicals together?
Yes, though with caution. DreamScape and the Ultrasonic Mugwort Tincture are noted to synergize well together by Dr. Nick himself. Calea Z also synergizes with the Mugwort Tincture. Always start with one botanical, build familiarity with it over several nights, and only layer additional products once you understand how your body responds to each individually.
