Dr. Nick Notes
Artemisia absinthium is a species of wormwood native to temperate regions of Eurasia and Northern Africa and widely naturalized in Canada and the northern United States. Wormwood is commonly known as an ingredient in the spirit Absinthe as well as some other alcoholic beverages, including bitters, vermouth, and pelinkovac. Sometimes Wormwood is confused or interchanged with a more popular Artemisia known as as Armoise (Mugwort).
Wormwood essential oil has a warm, intoxicating energy and has luster around it’s claimed psychotropic effects in Absinthe. For practical purposes, infusing this at low concentrations (0.1 – 5%) into other therapeutic formulas for it’s cleansing and purification properties are truly unique. For parasites / worms, consider using in a home diffuser or creating a synergistic therapeutic oil with Wormwood oil as one of many ingredients. We at EOW think this is a particularly interesting essential oil for purifying or shifting energies in an environment and is a great ingredient for more esoteric formulations.
Based on the safety reports I have seen with seizures and renal failures with as little / as much as 10 mL ingested, I don’t consider ingesting this one. For those that fail to take heed, immensely small doses are still outside the warranted precautions for internal ingestion. May be best for topical use in conjunction with other powerful herbs/topics used for specific purposes. Not for use in pregnancy or during breast-feeding! Note that even 5% is considered outside the safe recommended usage for direct dermal application. Anything past 0.5% should be highly considered for it’s particular usage, duration and it’s safety is not well supported.
How to Use
- Combine into other cleansing / purifying extracts to formulate powerful esoteric creations.
- Add highly diluted (<0.5%) to massage oils and salves to support menstruation
- Diffuse into the environment to purify the air, for short periods of time.

FAQs
Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) essential oil is steam-distilled from the leaves and flowering tops of the wormwood plant — the same botanical famous as the key ingredient in absinthe. It has a sharp, herbaceous, intensely bitter-green aroma and a long history of use in European herbal medicine for digestive support, parasite cleansing, and ceremonial protection. It is a potent oil that requires careful, knowledgeable use.
Wormwood has been used medicinally since ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman times. It is most associated with digestive bitters, antiparasitic applications, and as a ceremonial herb for protection and purification. In European folk tradition, wormwood was hung in doorways to ward off negativity and was a key ingredient in vermouth and absinthe. Modern aromatherapy uses it sparingly for digestive support and energetic clearing.
Wormwood contains significant levels of thujone, a compound that is neurotoxic in high doses. It should be used only by experienced aromatherapy practitioners, at very low dilutions (0.5–1%), and never for prolonged periods. It is strictly contraindicated during pregnancy, for nursing mothers, children, and anyone with a seizure disorder. It is not intended for internal use. Always consult a healthcare provider before using wormwood essential oil.
Wormwood is best used in very small amounts as part of a carefully formulated blend rather than as a standalone oil. Dilute at 0.5–1% maximum in a carrier oil for short-term topical use, or diffuse in very small quantities blended with other oils. For energetic clearing and ceremonial use, a single drop added to a diffuser blend with frankincense or sage is typically sufficient. Do not use undiluted or in high concentration.
Wormwood has a sharp, intensely herbaceous, bitter-green aroma with camphoraceous and slightly anise-like undertones. It is a powerful, polarizing scent — not sweet or floral in any way. The bitterness is characteristic and is the same quality that made it the signature ingredient in absinthe. In blends, wormwood adds a complex, mysterious green depth when used in tiny amounts.

Bring the price down a smidge, and offer larger bottles. But seriously who would have thought wormwood has a mint like aroma. 😚🤌
