Dr. Nick Notes

Vine of the Jungle ~ Cat’s Claw (Uncaria sp.) is a potent plant used by Indigenous cultures to stimulate the immune system & aid with inflammatory disease, contraception, ulcers and viral infections.  The whole vine is considered a potent medicinal powerhouse with the leaves and stems being rich in one category of constituents, Tetracyclic Oxindole Alkaloids (TOA) and the vine seems to be rich in Pentacyclic Oxindole Alkaloids (POA).  Uncaria tomentosa is more rich in POA’s compared to other common Cat’s Claw species and TOA’s are antagonistic to POA’s - therefore having either all vine OR leaves / stems should lead to best therapeutic outcome.

Different constituents found in Cat's Claw have been shown to decrease inflammatory molecules including IL-1, IL-4, IL-17, NF-κB, TNF-alpha and to a lesser extent Prostaglandin 2 (PGE2).  These mechanisms of action may suggest support for Cat’s Claw being supportive with inflammatory pain.  Small clinical studies have evaluated for reduction in arthritic pain (ie. osteoarthritis) both used alone and in conjunction with maca and have found notable improvements.  Maca + Cat’s Claw seemed to compare well with mild clinical improvements as natural supplement glucosamine sulfate.

There is literature which evaluated Cat’s Claw effectiveness for viral infections and noted an “Inhibition of viral attachment in the host cells” as the main mechanism for anti-viral activity.  Strong clinical evidence in humans demonstrating anti-viral properties seem to be lacking currently.  Cat’s Claw in general seems to be well-tolerated by most and should be avoided by pregnant women as Unicaria may stimulate abortion.

Our Cat’s Claw comes from a friend’s property in the Peruvian Amazon that houses native Indigenous whom cultivate botanicals for medicinal purposes.  Our Unicaria tomentosa comes from her property and is shredded dried vine with rich tannin flavor.  During our vacuum distillation process, the sticky nature of the alkaloid, flavinoid and terpenoids found in Cat’s Claw made this a difficult and inefficient journey for extraction.  We intend for this precious experiment to be enjoyed until distributed without any plans to re-extract in the future.

* Our small sample batch yielded less than 8 ounces of final product, only 12 bottles available to Alchemy Tribe members - very grateful for the challenging experience to yield our final extract with a rich phytochemical profile which created a thick sudsy foam under vacuum pressure. *

We find for our Ultrasonic Extracts, sublingual absorption held for 30-60 seconds, leads to better subjective absorption / effects.

1 review for Ultrasonic Cat's Claw Tincture

  1. Rebecca Nguyen (Essential Oil Wizardry)

Instantaneous relief! Yesterday I had a fever and body aches (possibly a food bourne illness?) that kept me in bed the whole day. Later that evening I remembered I had some tinctures from EOW that I got a couple years ago that helped with the same issue.
I took Cat’s Claw in conjuction with EOW’s Pau D’arco tincture and it effectively reduced my symptoms. My headache went from an 8 to a 4 and my body aches were also greatly reduced. Today I am feeling significantly better. I can’t thank Dr. Nick and the plants enough!
