Sceletium tortuosum is an herbaceous succulent-like plant, and a member of the Aizoaceae family (Ice Plant Family). Kanna grows wild only in the desert climate of South Africa, where this shrub is known as kougoed (or more commonly kanna). The South African Bushman who name this plant “Kanna” refer to this as the same name as the eland antelope which they consider a powerful “trance animal”. Kanna is associated with many ceremonies for divination, healing, and communal trance dances.
The South African Khoikhoi tribe is known to chew the fermented plant for ritual and healing dances. They often combined it with Cannabis sativa in these ritual ceremonies. Kanna is used in contemporary South Africa as an agent of pleasure, in a similar way the Cannabis is in the Western world. The first ethnobotanical evidence of psychoactive use and preparation was obtained in 1996.
There is still more research to be done on the effects and potential pharmacological applications of Sceletium tortuosum. According to local indigenous wisdom, only the fermented leaves (not fresh leaves) are said to be potent and have psychoactive effects. Natives of Queenstown and Namaqualand drink a tea of the leaves as an analgesic and to suppress hunger. Natives describe the effects of Kanna as relief from stressful lives, increase in self confidence, deepening of social interaction, as well as dissolution of inhibitions and feelings of inferiority.
Dr. Nick Notes
We are BEYOND excited to have produced this special plant tincture to our Alchemy Club members. Sceletium tortuosum (Kanna) is an uncommon African herb which provides very interesting effects in the mind-body. Kanna seems to have intriguing application for recreational euphoria and individuals experiencing lowered energy or mood. At the time of writing this description initially, I’ve ingested Kanna ~20 times and have noticed a great varied potency with route of administration, batch of plant material and extraction method. I have had the experience of a (short-lived) pleasurable drug-like euphoria, enhanced GI motility & enhanced mood. Typically there is little-no hangover effect, which has been surprising with the potency from some powerful experiences
Kanna seems to greatly activate the heart center as a botanical empathogen. Typically effects are approximately 1-2 hours in duration! I notice an increased circulation and my body can experience an increased sensitivity to my electrolyte balance. Euphoric doses of Kanna are not right for people with sensitive nervous systems or those holistically unfit. If your brain chemistry is unstable or you are taking other mood stabilizing medications, our Ultrasonic Kanna Extract / Tincture may not be ideal for you.
Our Ultrasonic Kanna Tincture seems to be slightly softer, quicker in action (~1 hour) than ingesting traditional Kanna tea or leaf and feels cleaner in terms of its effect profile. I rarely notice hangover qualities at micro to average dosing and the product feels a bit more introverted, despite a euphoric burst of tingling body energy. One may enjoy experimenting it’s usage to create an active meditation session. This product seems to greatly enhance its effects when taken sublingually (and held under the tongue for 30-60 seconds).
I personally enjoy alternating usage between our Kanna, Tantric Trilogy & Kava Euphoria tinctures for late night party vibes with a minimal crash beyond the lack of quality sleep.
How to Use
Not suggested for use with SSRIs, Antidepressants or Recreational Medications ~ combination risks serotonin syndrome which can lead to fatal side effects!
Micro-dosed: Experiment with 5-10 drops for a mood enhancement and playful relaxation in the body.
Average Experience: ½ dropperful - 1 dropperful, taken sublingually under the tongue. Hold for 30-60 seconds for ideal absorption!
Experimental Experience: Safety / Dosing not yet well tested above 1 dropper / hour. Explore consciously, know your body and use lower quantities first before increasing the dose / frequency! Personally I've enjoyed between 2-5 dropperful, and often will play with 2-3 dropperful, and redose after 1-2 hours for heavier, longer experiences. Your body is your own unique testing grounds, so do take responsibility for your own actions and usage when exploring Ultrasonic Kanna Tincture.
Precautions
Clinical research has not been done on Sceletium tortuosum and the safety of its use. Kanna is not recommended for consumption during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Not suggested for use with SSRIs, Antidepressants or Recreational Medications ~ combination risks serotonin syndrome which can lead to fatal side effects! Do not use at times during operating motor equipment / heavy machinery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Kanna (Sceletium tortuosum) is a succulent plant native to South Africa that has been used by indigenous San and Khoikhoi peoples for centuries as a mood-elevating botanical. It contains mesembrine and related alkaloids that interact with the serotonin system, producing effects that people commonly describe as mood-lifting, anxiety-reducing, and gently euphoric. Many users report a sense of calm well-being, enhanced sociability, and reduced stress. The effects are typically subtle and functional — most people find they can go about their day while enjoying a brighter, more relaxed outlook. Lower doses are better integrated throughout the day while higher doses can be more potent and euphoric.
EOW's Ultrasonic Kanna Tincture is designed for sublingual use — place the desired amount under your tongue, hold for 30-60 seconds, and then swallow. Sublingual absorption tends to produce faster and more noticeable effects than simply swallowing. You can also add the tincture to a small amount of water or juice if you prefer. Start with a small dose and adjust based on your experience. Many people use it before social situations, creative work, or meditation. Most people will start between 1/4 and 1 dropperful depending on intentions for use and sensitivity (ie. general mood vs social use). Dr. Nick will typically use 1-3 dropperful in a party setting, and kanna can be consciously redosed each 1-2 hours. Start low and go slow, 1/4 - 1/2 dropperful is a great place to start. After repeated experiences, can explore using a larger quantity to discover your sweet spot for your intentional usage.
Kanna's primary active compounds are mesembrine, mesembrenone, and mesembrenol — a group of alkaloids that function as natural serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs). This means they help keep serotonin active in the brain for longer, which is associated with improved mood, reduced anxiety, and a general sense of well-being. Unlike pharmaceutical SSRIs, kanna's alkaloids work through a gentler, plant-based mechanism. The ultrasonic extraction method used by EOW helps preserve the full spectrum of these compounds for a more complete experience.
Ultrasonic extraction uses high-frequency sound waves to break open plant cell walls, releasing the active compounds more efficiently and thoroughly than many traditional extraction methods. This process operates at lower temperatures, which helps preserve heat-sensitive alkaloids like mesembrine. The result is a full-spectrum tincture that captures a broader range of kanna's beneficial compounds compared to basic alcohol extractions. It's a modern technique that honors the plant's complete chemistry while producing a cleaner, more potent final product.
Start with a small amount and work up gradually. Individual sensitivity to kanna varies quite a bit, and factors like body weight, metabolism, and whether you've eaten recently can all influence the experience. Hold the tincture under your tongue for 30-60 seconds for best absorption. Give it at least 20-30 minutes to fully take effect before considering an additional dose. Most people will feel the effects for 1-2 hours. As with all botanical supplements, less is often more — finding your minimum effective dose tends to produce the best experience.
Kanna's alkaloids act on the serotonin system, so caution is warranted when combining it with other substances that affect serotonin — particularly pharmaceutical SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, or other serotonergic medications. Combining multiple serotonin-active substances can potentially lead to serotonin syndrome, a serious condition. If you're taking any medications, especially antidepressants, consult your healthcare provider before using kanna. For non-serotonergic supplements and botanicals, kanna is generally considered compatible, but it's always wise to introduce one new thing at a time. It is our strong recommendation that if you are combining kanna with other botanicals, get to know each botanical including kanna well, through numerous experiences, before responsibly combining!
Most people describe the kanna experience as a subtle but noticeable lift in mood — like a gentle wave of well-being, tingling and body euphoria that settles in over 20-30 minutes. It's commonly described as calming without being sedating, uplifting without being stimulating. Some people notice enhanced empathy, increased sociability, and a greater sense of ease in social situations. Others find it helps quiet anxious mental chatter and promotes a more present, grounded state. The effects tend to be functional and clear-headed rather than intoxicating. Higher doses can be more euphoric, non-linear with feelings of bliss.
When taken sublingually (under the tongue), most people begin noticing effects within 15-30 minutes. Holding the tincture under the tongue for at least 30-60 seconds before swallowing allows the active compounds to absorb directly into the bloodstream through the oral mucosa, bypassing the digestive system for faster onset. If you swallow it directly without sublingual absorption, it may take a bit longer and be less pronounced — typically 30-45 minutes. The effects generally last for a 1-2 hours, with a gentle come-down that most people barely notice. Redosing with larger amounts, can yield a more perceptible, but mild come-down.
EOW's Ultrasonic Kanna Tincture is a full-spectrum liquid extract of Sceletium tortuosum, produced using Essential Oil Wizardry's proprietary ultrasonic extraction process with vitalized distilled water and organic craft spirits. This method captures a broader range of the plant's alkaloid and bioactive compounds compared to traditional tincture-making methods. Kanna is a legal botanical with a long history of traditional use.
Kanna (Sceletium tortuosum) is a succulent plant native to South Africa that has been used by the San and Khoikhoi peoples for centuries. It is traditionally valued for mood elevation, stress relief, and enhancing social connection. The plant contains mesembrine and related alkaloids that interact with serotonin pathways. It is legal in most jurisdictions worldwide.
The Ultrasonic Kanna Tincture is a liquid extract made using EOW's proprietary ultrasonic extraction technology, which uses high-frequency sound waves to extract a full spectrum of plant compounds into a water and alcohol base. The Kanna Resin is a concentrated solid resin preparation. The tincture offers a different onset and experience profile, and the ultrasonic method is designed to capture compounds that might not be as present in a traditional resin extraction. The ultrasonic tincture is more gentle to titrate your experience, and comes on very quickly when held under the tongue. The resin is more potent, short acting, and more powerful of an experience - the resin may be a better legal substitute compared to illicit recreational substances such as MDA or MDMA. Each are fantastic in quality and effect, appropriate for usage with different intentions at different times.
The tincture is typically taken sublingually (under the tongue) for faster absorption. Start with a small amount and gradually adjust based on your response. It can also be added to beverages. As with all botanicals, listen to your body and start conservatively. Consult a healthcare provider before use if you are taking medications, particularly SSRIs or other serotonin-affecting drugs.
Kanna pairs with other mood-supporting EOW products including Kava Euphoria Blend, Kava CO2 Extract, Blue Lotus Absolute, and Violet Chill.
