Dr. Nick's Notes
Saffron is a precious, high labor intensive herb revered in the Middle East which has inspired the West over recent years regarding its health benefits. Saffron stamen are manually picked from the Crocus sativus flowers which yield a premium priced and highly aromatic spice, used commonly in Indian and other Middle Eastern cuisine. Saffron stamen carries a dark red pigment and in our Ultrasonic Extracted Tincture, you will appreciate a beautiful red-orange-gold.
Saffron has been noted for it’s mood-enhancing quality and has recently been researched for depression – compounds such as crocin and safranal found in Saffron, are believed to enhance serotonin levels. – research articles suggest it may provide some benefit, evaluated in the following cases: reducing inflammation, supportive for eye health (increases circulation, reducing retinal inflammation), neuroprotection (ie. Alzheimer’s). Saffron is rich in antioxidants and helps digestion, especially with gas & bloating. Saffron is believed to aid with metabolism and traditionally Saffron has been used to aid with various PMS symptoms. .
I find my body and brain respond most notably at about 1 dropperful. My mood enhances, my environment feels more vibrant – I generally feel really good when I take Saffron. It’s quite a lovely herb with a sunny, uplifting & nourishing feeling – I’m very eager to be able to share this with our community! Giving much gratitude for our Iranian source Mr. Mohamadi, whom has offered us this precious Saffron to extract, and to yield us to produce this fine tincture.

FAQs
Saffron consists of the hand-harvested stigmas of Crocus sativus, each flower producing only three stigmas that must be collected by hand during the brief autumn flowering season. It takes approximately 75,000 flowers to produce a single pound of saffron, making it the world's most expensive spice by weight. This extraordinary labor intensity has ensured that genuine saffron has always been a luxury commodity, traded across the ancient Silk Road and appearing in Persian, Indian, Greek, Egyptian, and Roman medicine for over three thousand years. Beyond its culinary fame, saffron has a remarkable and growing evidence base in modern pharmacological research for its effects on mood, depression, anxiety, cognitive function, and eye health, making it one of the botanical world's most versatile and well-studied therapeutic plants.
Saffron's primary bioactive compounds, safranal, crocin, and crocetin, have been extensively studied and show consistent activity across multiple therapeutic areas. Clinical research has documented significant antidepressant and anxiolytic effects, with multiple trials showing saffron to be as effective as standard pharmaceutical antidepressants for mild to moderate depression with significantly fewer side effects. This makes it one of the most compelling natural mood-support botanicals backed by genuine clinical evidence. Saffron also has documented benefits for cognitive function and memory, making it relevant for age-related cognitive decline. Its carotenoids, crocin and crocetin, support retinal health and have been studied for macular degeneration. Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and aphrodisiac properties round out its therapeutic profile.
Conventional saffron extraction typically involves hot water infusion, which does extract the water-soluble crocins that give saffron its characteristic golden color and primary mood-supporting properties. However, the heat also degrades more delicate compounds including safranal, which is responsible for saffron's distinctive aroma and contributes to its anxiolytic effects, as well as more fragile secondary metabolites whose roles in saffron's overall efficacy are still being studied. EOW's ultrasonic cold-extraction process releases the complete contents of the saffron stigmas at ambient temperature, preserving the full spectrum of bioactive compounds including those lost in hot water extraction. The result is a more complete and aromatic preparation that captures the whole-plant intelligence of this extraordinary botanical.
Ultrasonic Saffron Tincture is most effective when used consistently over several weeks, as its antidepressant and mood-stabilizing benefits are cumulative and build with regular daily use, consistent with the clinical trial protocols in which its efficacy has been documented. Administer sublingually by placing drops under the tongue and holding for 60 seconds before swallowing. The tincture can also be added to warm water, herbal tea, or a small amount of milk for a golden milk-inspired preparation. Many users prefer taking it in the morning with breakfast as part of a daily mood and cognitive support routine. The tincture has a distinctly floral, slightly honey-like aroma and taste that makes it pleasant to work with. For acute mood support, some users also use it situationally on days when additional emotional resilience is needed.
Saffron has an excellent safety profile in clinical research at standard supplemental doses, with human trials of up to 16 weeks showing no significant adverse effects. At very high doses, saffron can cause nausea and is potentially harmful, but these doses are far above what any tincture preparation would provide in normal use. Those taking prescription antidepressants should consult their healthcare provider before adding saffron, as its serotonergic activity could theoretically interact with SSRIs. Saffron is not recommended during pregnancy in supplemental amounts, as large doses have historically been associated with uterine stimulation. It is safe alongside most common medications at standard supplemental doses, but a conversation with your healthcare provider is always worthwhile before adding any new botanical supplement to your routine.
