Dr. Nick's Notes
The energy expressed through Port Orford Cedar Essential Oil is gentle, woodsy and light – seemingly more sweet and subtle than Himalayan / Atlas cedar essences. Â Upon smelling this extract, one gets transported into the wet forest of Oregon where the birds fly courageously and the beautiful landscape swoons with each sunset.
I’ve found this to be a neat collectible plant essence for essential oil aficionados and perfumers alike.  Not commonly traded on the commercial essential oil market, this is truly a neat addition to botanical perfumery adding another dimension in the mid-notes.
My therapeutic application with this Port Orford Cedarwood Essential Oil has been limited – applied to the bottom of the feet, I have found this to be quite grounding and relaxing. Â When inhaled I notice increased awareness into the moment, reminding me to be still in my body. Â This Port Orford Cedar Oil is fortifying and protective.
FAQs
Port Orford Cedar Essential Oil is wildharvested and steam distilled from the wood of the Port Orford Cedar tree native to Oregon, a species that grows only in a narrow coastal range where the state meets Northern California. The oil carries a distinctive terpene profile including terpineol, cadinene, pinene, camphor, fenchol, and numerous other constituents that contribute to its complex, layered woody aroma, quite different from more commonly known cedarwood oils. Port Orford Cedar is a distinct species from the more commonly available Cedar Atlas or Virginian Cedarwood offered elsewhere in EOW's catalog, giving it a unique place among the company's wood-based essential oils and a more limited, regionally specific sourcing story.
Port Orford Cedar has a nuanced woody profile that blends well with a wide range of other botanicals, including Bergamot, Cedar Atlas, Clary Sage, Cypress, Frankincense, Jasmine, Juniper, Lavender, Neroli, Orange, Pine, Petitgrain, Rose, Rosemary, Sandalwood, Spearmint, Vetiver, and Ylang Ylang. This versatility makes it a useful base or supporting note in botanical perfumery, whether the goal is a grounding woody composition or a brighter floral blend that benefits from a subtle wood undertone beneath the more prominent notes. Perfumers who have grown tired of the more common cedarwood profiles often turn to Port Orford Cedar for a fresh take on a familiar category.
EOW's Port Orford Cedar Essential Oil is wildharvested from trees native to Oregon and extracted through steam distillation of the wood, a traditional method that has been used for wood-based essential oils for centuries. This extraction method preserves the oil's full terpene profile without the use of solvents, consistent with EOW's broader sourcing philosophy of using organic, wildcrafted, or unsprayed plant material whenever possible across its entire catalog. The wood-based extraction also means the tree itself is not destroyed to produce the oil, since heartwood processing can often make use of naturally fallen or sustainably harvested material rather than requiring the felling of living, healthy trees.
As with most wood-based essential oils, Port Orford Cedar should be diluted in a carrier oil before topical application, and a patch test is recommended for those with sensitive skin given its complex terpene content and the number of individual compounds present in the oil. It has not been evaluated by the FDA and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Anyone who is pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or managing a medical condition should consult a physician before regular use, particularly given how many distinct aromatic constituents are present in this particular wood oil compared to simpler single-note oils.
Port Orford Cedar, botanically Chamaecyparis lawsoniana, is a distinct species from Cedar Atlas or Virginian Cedarwood, and grows only in a narrow native range along the Oregon coast where redwood forests meet the Pacific Ocean. This gives it a different terpene composition and a more nuanced, less overtly sweet profile than some other cedarwood oils commonly found in aromatherapy catalogs. Customers who already use Cedar Atlas or Virginian Cedarwood in their blends often add Port Orford Cedar for a subtly different woody note that layers well without duplicating an existing cedarwood character, effectively expanding their wood-note palette rather than replacing what they already have.
