Dr. Nick's Notes
If you’re looking for a stellar essential oil bug spray, or the best natural essential oils bug repellent, you’ve discovered this here with Essential Oil Wizardry’s Bug Repel! Bug Repel was originally formulation inspired by the epic bug epidemic craze that spooked Burning Man in 2015 (remember that?!) – Bug Repel was my product formulation gift to the Playa.
This formulation was downloaded and inspired by well-documented | anecdotal insect / natural bug repellent ingredients both from a folklore & scientific perspective. Designed to be broad-spectrum coverage, this low-skin irritation essential oil bug repellent blend smells like a sweet dream. Bug Repel blend is quite reminiscent of a bug-away bracelet I purchased in early 2013, soaked in time-releasing essential oils for keeping away mosquitoes (which worked reasonably well) while I was living in the Peruvian Amazon.
The blend Bug Repel brings together well-studied essential oil extracts including Lemon Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus citriadora) & Citronella which contain active ingredients in natural bug spray products on the mainstream market popular for repelling mosquitoes. Peppermint adds a cooling, analgesic property which comforts bites when they do happen (and they do still happen!). Pink Peppercorn is a less known extract that has been used as an ingredient in essential oil bug repellent in less developed countries. Cinnamon Leaf aids with numbing a dermal region, aids with reducing inflammation and is offensive to some invasive species. Tea Tree stimulates the body’s immune system (white cells) and has a mild medicinal aroma that is gentle / balanced in Bug Repel but keeps away certain insects. Lavender has a nice soothing aroma and aids with reducing itching for active bug bites. Rose-Geranium is said to repel insects, and also brings a nice aromatic heart note.
Bug Repel Mister may be sprayed on the clothing and also on the skin directly. The Essential Oil Blend is enhanced with ORMUS which potentiates the aroma & seems to aid with the formulation’s absorption / duration of effectiveness. Test usage on your skin type – Bug Repel may need to be further diluted or topical use avoided on some individuals with sensitive skin. I’ve seen Bug Repel’s amazing bug repellent quality when I really needed support in very insect rich locations around North & South America – the scent is relatively pleasant, the mild irritation feels really good when applied to the skin ridden with bug bites.
This product seems to provide a pleasant and notable reduction of many species of insects (ie. ants, mosquitoes, ticks) and also confers a topical solution for fresh bug bites (see Violet Chill for our ideal after-bite formulation) to ease swelling, reduce itching sensation, and aid with the speed of recovery, after a bite has occurred.

FAQs
Bug Repel is EOW's natural botanical insect repellent blend, built around Lemon Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus citriodora) and Citronella, which are the active ingredients in many commercially recognized natural bug spray formulations. The blend is designed as a plant-based alternative to DEET-based repellents, using botanicals with a well-documented history of repelling a wide variety of insects.
Lemon Eucalyptus oil (Eucalyptus citriodora) is one of the few plant-based insect repellents with recognition from public health agencies including the CDC as an option for repelling mosquitoes that may carry disease. The active component p-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD), which is naturally present in Eucalyptus citriodora, is responsible for much of its repellent efficacy. This distinguishes Lemon Eucalyptus meaningfully from other botanical repellents with less evidence behind them.
Apply to exposed skin and clothing before outdoor activities. Dilute in a carrier oil or spray base at an appropriate concentration before applying to skin. Reapply every few hours or as needed, and avoid applying to broken skin, near eyes, or on the face of children. As a botanical product, it may not provide the same duration of protection as synthetic repellents, so reapplication is important during extended outdoor exposure.
Dr. Nick's Bug Repel has been included in his Field Medical Kit, which was field-tested by the medical staff at Lightning in a Bottle festival in 2016. EOW notes that it works well across a wide variety of insects and in diverse outdoor environments from Peru to North American forests in the summer. This real-world application context is one reason it has maintained a consistent presence in EOW's catalog as a practical, trusted product. One thing to remember is the typical effectiveness is between 1-4 hours, so you may have to reapply for extended outdoor adventures.
Lemon Eucalyptus oil (not to be confused with eucalyptus globulus) is generally not recommended for children under the age of 3, and some guidelines suggest caution up to age 10 for leave-on applications. Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before applying any essential oil-based insect repellent to young children, and always keep out of reach of children.

Strong stuff! Bugs begone! I’m diluting this in some distilled water in a spray bottle for when I’m in the yard or the woods! I had a bite that persistently irritated and one undiluted dab took care of that! Like I said it’s powerful, you may not want to reach for those blueberries right after handling!

Strong smell mixture but seemed to keep the bugs away
