Q: What is baobab oil and what plant does it come from?

Baobab oil is cold-pressed from the seeds of Adansonia digitata, the iconic baobab tree -- sometimes called the tree of life -- native to sub-Saharan Africa, Madagascar, and parts of Australia. The baobab is one of the most extraordinary trees on the planet, capable of living for thousands of years and storing enormous amounts of water in its distinctive trunk. The seeds inside the baobab fruit are pressed to yield a lightweight, golden oil rich in omega fatty acids and vitamins. It has been used in African communities for centuries for skin care, hair care, and nutrition.

Q: What are the benefits of baobab oil for skin?

Baobab oil is exceptionally rich in omega fatty acids -- particularly oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids -- which makes it deeply nourishing for the skin. It absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy residue and supports the skins natural moisture barrier. Its used for dry, dehydrated, and mature skin types. Many people find it helpful for improving skin elasticity, reducing the appearance of stretch marks and scars, and soothing eczema and psoriasis-prone skin.

Q: Is baobab oil good for hair?

Absolutely -- baobab oil is a superb hair treatment. Its lightweight texture means it absorbs into both the hair shaft and scalp without weighing hair down or leaving it greasy. It helps restore moisture, reduce frizz, and add shine. For a deep conditioning treatment, apply warm baobab oil from roots to ends, cover with a shower cap, and leave for 30-60 minutes before washing. For everyday use, a small amount can be applied to damp hair as a leave-in treatment or worked through dry hair as a finishing oil.

Q: How does baobab oil compare to argan oil?

Both are outstanding facial and hair oils but with different profiles. Argan oil is rich in oleic and linoleic acid with significant vitamin E content -- a classic moisturizing and antioxidant oil. Baobab oil is also rich in oleic and linoleic acids but additionally contains significant amounts of alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 that is rarer in carrier oils. Baobab tends to be slightly lighter in texture than argan. Both are excellent, and many formulators use them together for a broad-spectrum fatty acid profile.

Q: Can baobab oil be used on the face?

Yes -- baobab oil is an excellent facial oil for most skin types. Its lightweight texture and high fatty acid content make it nourishing without being comedogenic. Its particularly well-suited for dry, mature, and sensitive skin types. Apply 3-5 drops to clean, slightly damp skin in the morning or evening, or use it as a carrier for facial essential oil blends. It also makes a wonderful eye area treatment applied gently around the orbital bone to support the delicate skin there.

Baobab oil is obtained from the seeds of Adansonia tree. The Baobab tree is one of the most characteristic trees of Africa, and it is often called the upside down tree. The tree is very distinct in it’s shape as it appears it’s roots grow upwards. The oil is quite viscous, with a rich, silky feel and a mild aroma. Baobab oil is an excellent moisturizer and ideal for numerous cosmetic applications. Baobab is one of the few oils which is added in its raw state in cosmetic products. Baobab oil has become one of the most prominent oils from Africa.

Baobab oil comes from seeds of the fruits of any of the 9 species of Adansonia on the planet. These trees have a thick trunk which is usually thickest in the middle. Of all the species, the Adansonia grandidieri trees look the most picturesque. These trees store water in their trunks and are able to survive years of drought. Baobab trees may live thousands of years.

The seeds of this tree are rich in oil. Traditionally in Africa, Baobab seeds are collected to extract cooking oil. Its fruit resembles coconuts, but the taste is somewhat tart. These Baobab fruits are high in many nutrients, and as such are of great nutritional importance for the local tribes. The oil is obtained from the seeds using cold pressed method, in most cases. This is the best in terms of conserving nutrients and preventing contamination of oil with unwanted chemicals. However, baobab oil may not be ideal as an edible oil because of the presence of certain toxic compounds.
