Dr. Nick Notes
Sugandha Kokila essential oil is distilled from the berries of the evergreen tree Cinnamomum glacescens that grows wild in parts of Nepal. The oil has traditionally been used by the indigenous people of Nepal as demulcent and stimulant. It is often used as a fragrance in cosmetics, perfumes, and hygiene products though this seems to be a less common botanical ingredient on the essential oil / perfumery market.
Sugandha Kokila may alleviate pain associated with muscle tension and inflammation. Some believe it may also assist in inducing menstruation though I have no personal / professional experience supporting this idea. Research, studies, traditional usage and modern usage has been more difficult to trace for this less known plant extract.  To date we’ve used this as an ingredient in several of our botanical ingredients to add an earthy, cherry note to our botanical perfumes
Our distiller works/manages a collective of farmers - they have a unique community model for bringing their botanical extracts to the world which support hundreds of families of farmers in the region. Purchasing this oil directly allows us to give back more to this collective of organic practice farmers (who don’t have the money to certify their product as organic) by purchasing more of their precious essential oils.  Essential Oil Wizardry carries about ~10 very vital extracts from their group; their Nepalese extracts are quite powerful and alive!
Our Nepalese Extracts Include: Lemongrass, Spikenard, Rhododendron, Xanthoxylum, Sugandha Kokila, Sweet Basil, Juniper, Wintergreen.
How to Use
- Sugandha Kokila essential oil may be infused into salves, lotions & skin creams using 1-3.3%.
- Very interesting ingredient for botanical perfume notes ~ mid-top notes, adds an uplifting earthy/cherry characteristic that is exciting to create around.
Precautions
Dilute with carrier oils or other ingredients. Tisserand & Young suggest a maximum use of 3.3% in formulations due to methyleugenol content and theoretically liver carcinogenicity at higher dosages.
