Kakanga Root (Nectandra coriacea)
Wildharvested, Sun-Dried / Raw Kakanga Root (Nectandra coriacea) from St. Croix, Virgin Islands
Sacred root preserved wisdom from the native priests / elders of the Virgin Islands. Kakanga Root is used by the Rastas and medicine men in the local region. The indigenous will steep these roots in wine and brew powerful tonics or add with other herbs, roots and bush to craft teas for well-being. Drinking "Bush Tea" or "Root Tea" on the island is popular for people of all ages to physically motivate. Kakanga (known in roots beverages) is added to build energy or chi-force, strengthen sexual potency, and to aid the sick / weak. When young people are lazy, elders will feed kakanga root to build their inner fire to take action. Very masculine and powerful tonic, truly a gift of this island for their people, and for a select few through our audience!
Our wildcrafted Kakanga Root is harvested on the island by our dear Rastafarian brother, Jah Chris from the island of St. Croix ~ his harvest practices are consciously considered, taught by his indigenous elders to follow the roots towards the tips and to harvest humble amounts. The root structure provides to long spreading root networks that journey in opposite directions and the importance of sustainable harvesting is well imprinted in Jah Chris awareness & practice.
Dr. Nick Notes
My experience In-JOYs using 1-3 grams at a time, first I will steep the roots in warm-hot water ~ typically I can resteep for several days with these same roots or about 7-10 teapots of tea. Indigenous wisdom shares Kakanga Roots are to strengthen the physical body, aid with deeper confidence, inspire deep motivation, and are prescribed locally by the medicine elders for "lazy ones". Harvesting these roots are typically reserved wisdom by the local elder priests and he estimates about 5 people on his entire island know this tree, how to harvest / locate this precious root and celebrate it's existence for public consumption. My friend Jah Chris was just shown this sacred tree in it's living form in 2020 for the first time - though he has been using Kakanga since his teenage years. Elder priests warn teenagers on the island not to take too much to prevent having a ferocious erection (priaprism) - this is not far from the truth and this root demands to be respected!
I feel quite gifted that he entrusted me with his remaining stock to share / distribute ~ Truly an honour! I explored a one-week AM dieta about 1-2.5 grams / day with it using a dry-blade vitamix and making tea each AM and resteeping throughout the day. Kakanga root definitely got my attention, the effects are quite notable and most people who experience the root are grateful to commune with this plant. This is a precious, limited island resource and orders are limited to one bag of Kakanga with any purchase. We choose to honour the sacred, limitedness of this sacred root and to empower the people of it's island fairly should larger stock be available to support the local community in a sustainable way.

FAQs
Kakanga root is a traditional botanical from the Virgin Islands and sourced from the isle of St. Croix, which has been used in indigenous healing practices for generations. The Kakanga Root is a primary ingredient sold on the streets in their "root/bush teas". Traditionally it's used to motivate teenagers when they feel lazy, to help give elders energy and vitality, stimulate sexual drive in men (especially) and women, while promoting good health and fertility. The root carries a distinctive scent and strong flavor profile and is traditionally used to make tea, or added to exotic homemade bush wines. As a niche botanical, it's not widely available in the essential oil market, making it a unique offering for those drawn to rare and traditionally significant plant materials. We source it directly from a friend who lives on the island, sources it directly and sustainably from the hills, and has provided us the traditional use of this root for his people.
In traditional practice, kakanga root has been used primarily as a tool to aid with health and vitality. Kakanga may be prescribed by the bush doctors and local rastas & herbalists to promote good health, vitality. The kakanga root may be given to troubled youth to help give them focus. Kakanga root is given to elders to help keep them strong and vital. For men with sexual impotency, kakanga is recommended. Typically the root is combined with other local roots & herbs and drank as part of a vitality tea. By itself, the root has a strong flavor profile, and may have a potent effect - typically the synergy of roots and herbs helps to temper the flavor and effect profile. The root is often associated with protective and grounding energies. As with all traditionally sacred botanicals, approaching it with respect and intentionality enhances the experience.
Our founder dieted with Kakanga root for an extended period, and had extensive discussions with the supplier who is growing into an indigenous elder and wise man. Traditional uses on the island of St. Croix are around fortifying health, stimulating male sexual energy, supporting fertility, aiding with energy. Kakanga root is given to men and women to help with fertility, teenagers to help give motivation and dispel laziness, and to the elders to keep them healthy and strong.
Kakanga root is grown on the Virgin Islands, specifically from the island of St. Croix. Our friend has been initiated by the Island priests who reserve the knowledge of this sacred root, and have taught him how to identify this special tree and how to sustainably harvest the root without killing the tree. This root is crucial for their local bush / root tea formulations, and is a staple in their indigenous medicines. We are honored to source this rare, prized, indigenous root, in a sustainable way!
Kakanga root has a history of traditional use amongst the peoples on the Pacific Islands. As with any botanical product, we recommend approaching it thoughtfully and starting with small amounts to see how you respond. If you plan to ingest or prepare the root in any way, consult with a knowledgeable practitioner or healthcare professional first. Pregnant or nursing individuals should exercise additional caution and seek professional guidance.
Kakanga Root has an earthy, woody, deeply sweet with euphoric indolic notes. It shares some aromatic kinship with galangal, vetiver and ginger but has its own distinct profile that is more earthy and less sharp. Many people find it deeply grounding and anchoring, the kind of scent that immediately connects you to the earth, slows down a busy mind and anchors you into the body.
According to Chris, our resident on St. Croix whom wildharvests this precious root, Kakanga has a long history of use amongst his people for physical health and well-being. This root strengthens the body, provides resilience in old age, and is prescribed by the elders for teenagers whom are lazy. Kakanga Root is recommended for men having difficulty maintaining erection on the island, and warned not to take too much (concern of prolonged erection)! This is one of the most important roots to his people on the island, and is a primary ingredient in the "Root tea" commonly sold in public by vendors.
Kakanga Root pairs well with other earthy and grounding oils such as vetiver, spikenard, cedarwood, and patchouli. It also blends beautifully with resins like frankincense and myrrh, which amplify its protective and ceremonial qualities. For a more complex and warming synergy with essential oils, try combining it with black pepper, cardamom, or ginger. It is a wonderful anchor note in blends designed for grounding, meditation, or root chakra work.
