Dr. Nick Notes

Hops is a wonderful, diversely useful botanical extract. The hops oil is extracted from the flowers of the climbing vine which are sticky and fragrant with pollen and sap. Many of us know the smell and flavor of hops from beer, but hops wasn’t used in beer until the 9th century. Predating the use of hops in beer, hops has been used by different cultures for different therapeutic purposes. In China, it is used for Pulmonary Tuberculosis and Cystitis (Lawless, 149). In other cultures is has been used to relieve pain, reduce anxiety, reduce respiratory illness, improve the health of hair and skin, relieve headaches, and soothe menstrual pains.

One of the most common uses of Hop Extract among aromatherapy practitioners is as an analgesic. Hops Extract are high in Myrcene, Humulene, and Caryophyllene which are chemical compounds that provide pain relief for the body. People with chronic pain sometimes turn to hops extract due to its ability to loosen tensed muscles and reduce spasms in nerve endings. The potent sedative qualities of this botanical extract can also help people who suffer from high levels of stress, mood swings and insomnia / restlessness.

Due to its anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and calming qualities, hops extract may be used diluted and blended with other essences to improve quality of the skin. It serves well to protect the skin from infection or irritation. Hops CO2 extract is particularly potent, and care should be used if your skin is especially sensitive to breakouts. Definitely dilute this powerful product before applying it onto the skin.

Overall CO2 extracted Hops Extract is a wonderful, diverse, and extremely therapeutic botanical extract that is an essential addition to any botanical medicine cabinet.

How to Use

General stress relief, headache, relaxation aid - This oil has fantastic effects when diffused throughout a room. When suffering from anxiety or pain, I suggest diffusing hops extract in your favorite diffuser to disperse the relaxing scent throughout the room. This could be a good time to sit quietly, meditate, and come back into your body. Good additions to this oil, for this purpose in your diffuser might be black spruce, pine, nutmeg, balsam, orange essence, clove or hyacinth.

For skin conditions - This oil can be blended with carrier oil in roughly a 5 to 10% concentration and applied to affected areas of the skin, or to healthy skin in order to boost natural glow and revitalize. On the skin this product also is extremely anti-microbial and is a natural preservative, preventing sickness and slowing the aging process.

For menstrual cramps, digestive health, pain relief - This oil is suitable for internal use in small amounts. Care is needed due to the fact that this oil is powerful and can cause internal irritation in high concentrations. My suggestion is to add one or two drops of this oil into an herbal tea. Hops CO2 extract is irritating to the throat as it goes down: if this bothers you, it can be put into capsules and swallowed. One or two drops in a capsule will go a long way! (Schnaubelt, 133)

For respiratory health - Diffusion of this oil works well for the respiratory system. If more effect is desired, blend a few drops of the oil with hot water and soak a rag, place over the face and inhale deeply. When the rag has cooled, repeat the process.

NOTE: Hops should not be used or consumed by any individual who is already suffering from depression.

Generally non-toxic and non-irritant; may cause sensitization in some individuals. Should be avoided by those suffering from depression. (Lawless, 149)
