Dr. Nick's Notes
Blood Orange oil was one of the first essential oils I was turned onto in 2011 as my path of wizardry ascended. The Israeli Blood Orange essential oil turned on hundreds of peoples taste buds in Conscious Bartending cocktails and ignited in Essential Oil Vaporizers. This oil carries a vibrant sweetness which uplifts the senses and adds sparkle to green salad dressings, beverages and desserts at the appropriate concentrations. May also be helpful reducing gas (carminative) after a large meal.
Blood Orange essential oil diffused has disinfecting properties which add vibrancy to an environment. Elevating mood, stimulating the immune system and reduces inflammation. Blood Orange is wonderful added to other cremes, salves, lotions and candles. This essence stimulates circulation when applied topically in a massage oil. Very versatile and juicy, Blood Orange is a wonderful asset to carry in your essential oil bag.
FAQs
Blood orange essential oil is cold-pressed from the rind of Citrus sinensis var. sanguinello and related varieties, a citrus fruit famous for its striking deep red flesh and juice. The color comes from anthocyanins -- antioxidant pigments that develop when the fruit experiences cold temperatures during growth. The essential oil, pressed from the peel, does not contain the red pigments since those are water-soluble and do not carry into the oil, but it does have a distinctly richer, more berry-like, and deeper aromatic profile than regular sweet orange. It is a premium citrus oil that perfumers prize for its complexity.
Blood orange essential oil has a bright, fresh citrus aroma with a distinctive deeper, slightly berry-like richness that sets it apart from regular sweet orange. There are hints of a warm, slightly floral undertone and a rounded sweetness that feels more complex and sophisticated than the straightforward brightness of sweet orange. It is an immediately appealing, uplifting scent that makes people smile -- universally loved in aromatherapy and perfumery alike.
Blood orange is one of the most uplifting oils in aromatherapy. Like other citrus oils it is excellent for improving mood, reducing anxiety, and creating a positive, energized atmosphere. It is particularly good for diffusing in spaces where you want to create warmth and happiness -- kitchens, living rooms, and workspaces. Some people find it helpful for appetite support and digestive comfort when diffused or applied diluted to the abdomen. It is also a wonderful oil for childrens aromatherapy blends due to its gentle, universally appealing character.
Cold-pressed blood orange oil has very low levels of furanocoumarins compared to other citrus oils like bergamot or lime -- it is generally considered low-risk for phototoxicity. That said, as a general precaution with any cold-pressed citrus peel oil, it is wise to avoid applying it to sun-exposed skin in high concentrations. At normal use levels in diluted personal care products the risk is minimal. For peace of mind, use it in the evening or stick to diffuser use if you are spending time in the sun.
Blood orange is a wonderful blending oil that pairs well with a wide range of aromatics. It is a classic match with other citrus oils -- bergamot, grapefruit, and lemon -- for bright, energizing citrus blends. With vanilla, benzoin, and sandalwood it creates warm, comforting gourmand compositions. Spice notes like cardamom, cinnamon, and ginger complement its warmth beautifully. For a sophisticated floral composition, try it with ylang ylang, neroli, and rose. It also adds unexpected brightness to deeper, more serious blends built around frankincense or vetiver.

I’ve been working with essential oils for over 20 years now, and like Dr. Nick I was initially enchanted – at least in part – by the glory of citrus oils. This blood orange oil is by far the best I’ve ever sampled, and I am delighted to use it in the chocolate we make over at http://www.endorfinfoods.com – thanks Dr. Nick and the Essential Oil Wizardry team!
