Dr. Nick's Notes
Clove buds are dried flower buds of the clove tree and are native to islands of Eastern Indonesia. Used for fragrant and medicinal purposes for thousands of years, clove buds played an instrumental role in the development of sea routes and trading ports throughout Asia and Europe (Kamatou, 2012).
Today, clove essential oil and its major phenolic constituent “Eugenol”, is used in industry for fumigant, dental and food additive purposes. Eugenol has been given Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA 2006). Organic Clove Bud Oil is widely recognized for analgesic and anesthetic properties in dentistry and may provide relief of toothache or dry sockets (complication of tooth extraction).
Beautifully warm and spicy, Clove Bud oil can be used for soothing pain or muscle aches (in the correct dilutions!). Clove essential oil also has calmative properties on the digestive tract ~ try a drop in herbal tea or topical massage with correct dilutions in the belly region for an upset stomach. Like many essential oils, clove oil is highly antimicrobial and has application as a household antiseptic and in the hospital setting against drug resistant bacteria (Hamed 2012, Warnke et al 2009).
Clove CO2 extract is such a full bodied version of the plant essence – I would describe the clove CO2 extract to be more complete in it’s flavor with an additional intensity of numbing. In my opinion, the CO2 of clove (and many spices for that matter) is the best method of extraction for the most luscious Clove product.
FAQs
Clove Bud essential oil is steam distilled from the unopened flower buds of Syzygium aromaticum, a tropical evergreen tree native to the Maluku Islands of Indonesia. Clove Leaf oil is distilled from the leaves and Clove Stem oil from the stems of the same plant. All three contain eugenol as their primary constituent, but Clove Bud oil has the richest, most complex aromatic profile and is considered the highest quality of the three. Clove Leaf and Stem oils are more industrial in application, while Bud oil is preferred for aromatherapy and perfumery.
Clove Bud has one of the richest therapeutic profiles of any essential oil. Its primary constituent, eugenol, is a powerful natural antiseptic and analgesic with well-documented effectiveness. It has been used in dentistry for toothache and gum pain for centuries. In aromatherapy, it is used for respiratory support, warming massage blends for muscle discomfort, and as a powerful immune-supporting oil during cold and flu season. It is also warming and stimulating when diffused, helping lift fatigue and mental fog.
Clove Bud is one of the oils that requires the most respect in terms of dilution and usage. Eugenol is a significant dermal sensitizer, meaning that repeated skin contact, especially at higher concentrations, can create a sensitization reaction that results in an allergic response to subsequent exposures. The maximum recommended dermal concentration is 0.5 percent according to research by Tisserand and Young. It should never be used undiluted on skin. It is also a mucous membrane irritant and should be kept away from the eyes, nose, and mouth. Despite these precautions, when properly diluted it is a powerful and valuable therapeutic oil.
Clove Bud pairs beautifully with other warming spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger for a rich, complex spice blend. For a classic holiday or mulled wine-inspired diffuser blend, combine it with orange, cinnamon, and cedarwood. In natural perfumery, clove bud adds an intense, warm spice note that works well in small amounts in oriental and gourmand compositions with benzoin, vanilla, and ylang ylang. For therapeutic muscle blends, pair it with black pepper, ginger, and marjoram.
Clove has one of the most dramatic histories of any spice. The Maluku Islands of Indonesia were known as the Spice Islands, and clove was so prized in ancient and medieval trade that it was literally worth its weight in gold in some markets. Wars were fought over control of the clove trade. In Ayurvedic medicine, clove has been used for thousands of years as a digestive, analgesic, and warming herb. In Chinese traditional medicine, it is associated with warming the kidneys and supporting digestive fire. In European folk traditions, cloves were used for protection, purification, and attracting prosperity.
