Dr. Nick Notes
Our Spikenard oil is produced from distilling the wildharvested roots of Nardostachys Jatamansi that grow wild in the Himalayan mountains. Nepal & India are amongst the top producers of this precious oil which is quite a precious resource. Spikenard is an endangered plant and is best used mindfully in moderation for this reason. Currently there are efforts to increase cultivation of Spikenard to reduce wildharvesting of this precious plant in both India & Nepal!

FAQs
Spikenard (Nardostachys jatamansi) essential oil is steam-distilled from the roots of a Himalayan flowering plant with deep spiritual significance — it is one of the most ancient sacred oils, referenced in the Bible as the oil Mary Magdalene used to anoint the feet of Jesus. It has a warm, earthy, woody, and slightly musky aroma that is deeply grounding and meditative.
Spikenard is traditionally used for deep relaxation, sleep support, emotional grounding, and spiritual practice. In Ayurvedic medicine, it is valued for calming the nervous system, supporting skin regeneration, and balancing the root and crown chakras simultaneously. Modern aromatherapy uses include stress relief, insomnia support, and skin care for mature or damaged skin.
Dilute Spikenard at 2–5% in a carrier oil and apply to the bottoms of the feet, crown of the head, or heart center before sleep or meditation. It can be diffused in small amounts for a deeply calming atmosphere. Spikenard blends beautifully with frankincense, myrrh, lavender, rose, and vetiver.
Spikenard has been used in Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, and Middle Eastern spiritual traditions for thousands of years. In Ayurveda, it is associated with devotion and the connection between earth and spirit. In Christian tradition, it represents the most precious offering — an oil so costly it was reserved for sacred anointing. EOW’s Spikenard is sourced with respect for these traditions and the plant’s Himalayan origins.
Spikenard is generally considered a gentle essential oil safe for topical use at 2–5% dilution in a carrier oil. It is not recommended for use during pregnancy due to traditional emmenagogue associations. As with all essential oils, perform a patch test before broad application and consult a healthcare provider if you are taking medications or have underlying health conditions.
Spikenard essential oil is a deeply grounding oil used primarily in aromatherapy, meditation, skin care, and spiritual practice. It's valued for its calming and sedative properties, making it a popular choice for relaxation, sleep support, and stress relief. In skin care, it's used to support mature or irritated skin. Spikenard has a long history as a sacred anointing oil and remains an important component in contemplative and ceremonial practices across multiple traditions. It's also a valued ingredient in natural perfumery as a warm, earthy base note.
Spikenard holds profound significance in biblical and spiritual tradition. It's most famously mentioned in the New Testament, where Mary of Bethany anointed the feet of Jesus with pure spikenard — described as an extremely costly offering. The oil also appears in the Song of Solomon. Beyond Christianity, spikenard has been used in Hindu traditions as an offering to the gods, and in Buddhist practice, it's mentioned as one of the key ingredients in temple incense. Its deep, earthy aroma has long been associated with devotion, surrender, and sacred connection.
Spikenard has a very distinctive scent that's quite unlike most other essential oils. It's deeply earthy, woody, and musky with sweet, slightly animal-like undertones. Some people describe it as having notes of damp forest floor, aged wood, and a warm sweetness reminiscent of valerian (the two plants are actually related). It's a polarizing scent — people tend to either love it instantly or need time to develop an appreciation for its complexity. In blending, it adds extraordinary depth and grounding quality.
Spikenard is one of the most calming essential oils available, making it excellent for sleep support. Try adding a few drops to your diffuser in the evening about 30 minutes before bed. You can also dilute it in a carrier oil and apply to the bottoms of your feet, the back of your neck, or your chest before sleep. Some people add a drop to their pillow or bed linens. For a deeply relaxing bath, mix a few drops with a carrier oil or bath salts before adding to warm water. It combines beautifully with lavender for an enhanced calming effect.
Spikenard has been used in skin care for centuries and is considered beneficial for mature, dry, or sensitive skin. It's believed to support cell regeneration and may help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. For skin use, dilute a few drops in a carrier oil like jojoba or rosehip and apply as a facial oil or add to your regular moisturizer. For hair, it's traditionally been used to nourish the scalp and support healthy hair growth. A few drops mixed into your conditioner or a scalp oil treatment can add spikenard's benefits to your hair care routine.
Spikenard's deep, earthy character pairs beautifully with a range of oils. Lavender is a classic pairing that enhances spikenard's calming properties while softening its intensity. Frankincense and myrrh create a sacred, contemplative blend. Vetiver and patchouli complement its earthiness for ultra-grounding combinations. For a brighter twist, try it with bergamot or sweet orange. Rose and spikenard together make a beautiful heart-opening blend. Cedarwood and sandalwood add woody warmth that harmonizes naturally with spikenard's profile.
While spikenard and lavender are both calming oils often used for sleep and relaxation, they're quite different in character. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is bright, floral, and herbaceous — it's light, familiar, and universally approachable. Spikenard (Nardostachys jatamansi) is deep, earthy, woody, and musky — it has a much heavier, more complex character. Interestingly, they're both members of the Valerianaceae family (though lavender is sometimes classified differently). They work beautifully together, with lavender's lightness balancing spikenard's depth. Spikenard is significantly rarer and more expensive than lavender.
Spikenard essential oil is distilled or extracted from the roots and rhizomes of Nardostachys jatamansi, a flowering plant native to the high-altitude regions of the Himalayas. It grows at elevations between 3,000 and 5,000 meters in Nepal, India, and parts of China. The plant is relatively small and grows slowly in harsh mountain conditions, which contributes to the oil's rarity and cost. Harvesting involves carefully digging up the rhizomes without destroying the plant's ability to regenerate. Much of the world's supply comes from Nepal, where it has been harvested and traded along ancient spice routes for thousands of years.

I found that blends containing fragrances of Oud (or similar tapestry/bodiment/language), ooze with my pheromones. This blend is similar for me…
Delectable.
