Boswellia carterii hydrosol
We are honoured to offer artisan extracted Frankincense Hydrosol from wildharvested resins sourced from the ancient land of Punt. Thousands of years ago these coveted regions were considered to be the home of the finest Frankincense & Myrrh. The artisan distiller comes from a family who lives in Puntland region of Somalia and imports them directly from their family and tribe.
The species of resin used in the artisan distillation comes from Boswellia carterii (Frankincense Carterii). Pristine water streams from a river in Washington State are delicately distilled to produce distilled water for use in this distillation process. Authentic Somali Frankincense Carterii Hydrosol is a by-product and direct result of grinding and hydro-distillation (specialized steam distillation) of the premium Frankincense resins.
About Our Hydrosol
Our Artisan Frankincense Hydrosol is a superior product with a milky colour, slightly opaque – this product still contains a fair amount (est. 1-2%) of essential oil in the hydrosol. There is a potent, beautiful depth to this Frankincense product. This hydrosol is phenomenal for the face, skin and can be used as a tonic for beauty. Some people enjoy spraying on the face or ingesting the solution for the anti-inflammatory properties touted by the resins. This can be applied to the body after a bath or shower, infused into homemade chocolate or desserts and is wonderful sprayed around the environment!
The family which procures the resins and processes them has a keen sense of social justice coupled with closeness to wild grown tree owners and harvesters communities in their native area Puntland region of Somalia. They participate with day-to-day local challenges in making progressive change. Sustainable harvesting is important – traditional Frankincense harvesters tend their hereditary trees and sell their precious resins within a status quo that leaves them locked in poverty while others reap the profits and sell as their own.
What has been their unique heritage for thousands of years they are stewards of some of our world’s rarest aromatics and medicinal. There is no one in the world better positioned, trained, or with the proper incentive to preserve these precious resources. This purchase supports a family committed to sustainable development instead of market-driven mainstream development in Puntland, Somalia. The development programs offer self-sustainable ways to engage the local community in the developmental process instead of imposing methods on them and making them dependent eventually. Together high quality frankincense resins are harvested through ethical and sustainable practices, and selling them directly to our artisan distiller family providing a superior quality product that brings abundance to all.
We use environment-friendly methods to extract and prepare our products. Puntland Frankincense supports smart harvesting through the practice of cyclical gum harvesting. This practice ensures tapped trees have time to recuperate. We also share the benefits of these techniques with the gum gatherers and other local stakeholders so they can take advantage from our experience. We are the inheritors of this ecosystem and caretakers of this ancient trade so we consider it our utmost responsibility to maintain it well into the future.
