FAQs
Amyris essential oil is steam distilled from the wood of Amyris balsamifera, a small tree native to Haiti and other parts of the Caribbean. Its sometimes called West Indian sandalwood or candlewood, though its botanically unrelated to true sandalwood. The oil has been used in Haitian folk medicine and has a long history as a candle-making material -- amyris wood burns so well it was historically used as torches. Today its valued in aromatherapy and natural perfumery as an affordable, sustainably sourced alternative to threatened sandalwood species.
Amyris has a warm, soft, woody aroma with creamy, slightly sweet, and mildly balsamic undertones. Its smoother and less complex than true sandalwood but shares some of its milky, woody warmth. There is a gentle, almost powdery quality to it that makes it very pleasing and easy to blend with. Its considerably more affordable than genuine Santalum sandalwood, making it a popular choice for those who want a woody base note without the high cost.
Amyris is a grounding, calming oil used in aromatherapy for relaxation and stress relief. Its warm, woody scent helps promote a sense of inner stillness and is a popular choice for meditation and sleep support blends. It has traditional use for skin care, particularly for dry or mature skin. Like sandalwood, amyris is sometimes used in sacred or ceremonial contexts for creating a peaceful, contemplative atmosphere. Its also gentle enough for most skin types when properly diluted.
Amyris is often marketed as a sandalwood substitute, and while it shares some similar characteristics -- warm, woody, slightly creamy -- it is a different oil with its own distinct profile. True sandalwood especially Santalum album has a deeper, more complex, almost medicinal creaminess that amyris does not quite replicate. That said, amyris is a beautiful oil in its own right and a genuinely useful base note. If you want a sustainably sourced alternative on a budget, amyris is an excellent choice. If you want the full experience of genuine sandalwood, there is no perfect substitute. Muhuhu, Amyris and Buddhawood are alternative options for sandalwood adjacent aromas.
Amyris is a fantastic blending oil -- it has a soft, unobtrusive character that supports other notes without competing with them. Use it as a base note fixative to add depth and longevity to your compositions. It works beautifully with florals like rose and jasmine, with other woods like cedarwood and vetiver, and with resins like frankincense and benzoin. For a tropical, exotic blend, pair it with ylang ylang, patchouli, and vanilla. Its also excellent in masculine-leaning compositions alongside black pepper, cardamom, and labdanum.
