FAQs
Benzoin is a fragrant resin harvested from the bark of Styrax trees -- primarily Styrax benzoin from Sumatra and Styrax tonkinensis from Laos and Vietnam. The resin seeps out naturally when the bark is wounded and hardens into aromatic chunks. Because benzoin resin is solid at room temperature and does not yield a true essential oil through steam distillation, it is most commonly processed into a resinoid using alcohol or an absolute using solvents, both of which produce a pourable, concentrated aromatic material for use in perfumery and aromatherapy.
Benzoin has a warm, sweet, vanilla-like aroma with rich balsamic undertones and a slight hint of cinnamon. Siam benzoin from Laos tends to have a cleaner, more vanilla-forward profile, while Sumatra benzoin is richer, darker, and more complex with deeper balsamic depth. Its deeply comforting -- one of those scents that immediately creates a sense of warmth and security. Many people find it familiar and nostalgic, even on first encounter.
Benzoin is used in aromatherapy primarily for its warming, comforting, and soothing properties. Its excellent for easing emotional tension, anxiety, and feelings of sadness or isolation. The warm, sweet scent wraps around you like a comfort blanket, making it a popular choice for times of stress or grief. For the skin and respiratory system, benzoin has traditional uses as a soothing, slightly antiseptic agent -- it has been used in traditional preparations like Friars Balsam for respiratory conditions and wound healing.
Benzoin is one of the most beloved base note fixatives in natural perfumery. Its sweet, vanilla-balsamic warmth adds depth, sensuality, and longevity to fragrance compositions. It blends beautifully with other warm base notes like vanilla, tonka bean, labdanum, and ambergris accords. In oriental compositions it is almost indispensable. It also rounds out and softens sharper spice notes and adds warmth to floral compositions. As a fixative, it helps anchor more volatile ingredients and extends the overall life of the fragrance on the skin.
They are not the same, but benzoin does smell distinctly vanilla-like -- particularly the Siam variety. Both benzoin and vanilla contain vanillin as a natural component, which accounts for the similarity. However, benzoin has a richer, more complex balsamic depth that genuine vanilla extract does not have, and vanilla has more of a gourmand, food-like sweetness that benzoin lacks. In natural perfumery, benzoin is often used as a more complex, resinous complement to vanilla rather than a substitute for it.
