Dr. Nick Notes
Zanthoxylum (AKA Xanthoxylum) is a small shrub or tree that grows wild in the hot valleys of the Himalayas. The fruits of Zanthoxylum bear the Tomar Seed which are ground up and added to cultural culinary dishes and also touted in Ayurvedic formulation as a digestive tonic and relaxant. In Ayurvedic medicine, Zanthoxylum is used to support liver imbalances; research supports that the phenolic compounds contained in the tomar seed have hepatoprotective properties.
Healers of the Himalayas have used Zanthoxylum essential oil primarily for respiratory conditions and improving vocal quality due to its stimulating and moistening effect on the larynx. Due to high Linalool content in the essential oil, Zanthoxylum essential oil may also be very therapeutic for infections, pain, swelling, spasms, and calming an overstimulated nervous system. Cultural use also supports it’s benefits of soothing an upset stomach and aiding with menstrual cramps.
