Dr. Nick's Notes
Organic hydro-distilled Lemon oil from S. Africa was one of the oils in my first set of therapeutic essential oils I ever purchased. The scent uplifts your nose, cleanses an environment and freshens clothing (try infusing into a dryer sheet). My first experiments using lemon essential oil were through vaporization & infusing into beverages. What I noticed with vaporization is a special overwhelming jolt of lemon zest ringing the internal body, clearing the throat and saturating the senses. There also seems to be a mild expectorant property, especially focused on thinning the mucus.
Lemon essential oil is super special in foods, salad dressings, soup and drinks. Also really enjoyable is infused into club soda, especially with natural salt added and a sprig of rosemary. Drinking this beverage in the morning seems to help flush the system and purify the liver. Lemon oil seems to counteract stomach acidity and speed up a slow digestive system. The limonene naturally found in lemon essential oil works well with acne – try making a night-time toner using 1-2 ounces of water with a few drops of lemon EO. This oil also has interesting cleaning ability and can really treat leather, moisturizing it and bringing back a fresh organic shine – the applications are truly endless for this essence!
FAQs
Lemon essential oil is cold-pressed from the outer rind of Citrus limon fruit. Cold pressing is the preferred method because it preserves the delicate, bright aromatic compounds that give lemon oil its characteristic clean, fresh, uplifting scent. Heat-processed lemon oil loses much of this brightness and complexity. EOW sources organic lemon oil, which ensures that the rind, where the oil lives, has not been treated with pesticides or synthetic waxes, making for a cleaner, purer product.
Lemon is one of the most researched citrus oils in aromatherapy and consistently shows positive effects on mood, mental clarity, and focus. Inhaling lemon oil has been shown in studies to reduce anxiety, improve concentration, and promote a sense of alertness and positivity. It is also used to purify and freshen the air in the home, particularly in a diffuser blend. Topically when diluted, it has astringent properties that make it useful in skin care for oily or congested skin types.
Cold-pressed lemon oil is phototoxic because it contains furanocoumarins, which can cause darkening of the skin or sunburn-like reactions when the skin is exposed to UV light after application. This means you should avoid applying cold-pressed lemon oil to skin that will be exposed to sunlight or UV lamps within 12 hours. Steam-distilled lemon oil does not contain these compounds and is not phototoxic, but also lacks some of the aromatic complexity. For daytime use, apply only to covered skin or opt for EOW's steam-distilled lemon.
Lemon is one of the most versatile blending oils available. It brightens and lifts almost any combination, which makes it a valuable top note in a wide range of applications. It pairs beautifully with other citruses like bergamot and grapefruit for an energizing blend. With lavender and eucalyptus it creates a classic clean and refreshing home diffuser blend. In natural perfumery, it adds brightness to heavier floral and resinous base notes. Try lemon with frankincense and rose for an elevated, classic composition. Check out Deep Woman for a botanical perfume with a Lemon twist.
Lemon essential oil is one of the most practical oils for household use. Add a few drops to water in a spray bottle with white vinegar for a natural, fresh-smelling surface cleaner. Diffuse it in the kitchen or bathroom for a clean, bright fragrance that helps neutralize cooking odors. Add to unscented dish soap or laundry for a fresh, natural citrus boost. Use in a DIY wood polish by combining with olive oil for a natural furniture treatment. Its natural antibacterial properties make it an excellent addition to natural cleaning formulas of all kinds.
