Dr. Nick Notes
My mentor Ravi Das [Will Lapaz, former owner of Eden Botanicals] once told me about 90-95% of amber oil available on the market is synthetic! This tree produces a true natural amber oil distilled from the “sweet gum” resin. Calming & grounding for the nervous system, perhaps this amber extract is best known for it’s aromatic properties.
This particular hydrodistilled Amber oil comes from wildharvested trees in Honduras. This amber oil extract is derived from the resinous sap that exudes from the outer bark when the tree is damaged. The resinous sap is known as “storax” or “styrax”. This sap has been used for centuries to treat common symptoms such as coughs, ulcers, skin issues, and infections. Styrax liquidambar or Liquidambar styraciflua is also reported to be burned as an incense and may be mixed with tobacco leaves for a sedating effect. It has been shown to have natural pesticide effects for agricultural purposes as well.
Styrax liquidambar produces an Amber oil which is extremely sticky and thick making it incredibly difficult to work with (ie.too thick to pour through a traditional euro top with orifice reducer). Essential Oil Wizardry has formulated this product to be more harmonious with the skin and easier to blend by infusing the Styrax liquidambar extract into Organic Fractionated Coconut Oil infused with ORMUS to produce a beautiful and easy to use Amber Anointing Oil. The resulting product is rich, soothing and very balanced with it’s potency while providing a great feel on the skin and allows for ease of usage!

Frequently Asked Questions
Liquidambar amber oil is derived from the resin of Liquidambar styraciflua, commonly known as the American sweetgum tree. The tree produces a fragrant balsamic resin when its bark is wounded, and this resin is then processed to produce the amber oil. Its a beautiful, warm, balsamic oil with a rich history in traditional medicine and perfumery. Unlike many products called amber oil that are blended or synthetic compositions, this is a true botanical extract from the Liquidambar species and one of few authentic natural amber scents on the market.
Liquidambar amber oil has a warm, sweet, balsamic aroma with rich undertones of vanilla, honey, and dried fruit. Its softer and more nuanced than many amber compositions -- there is a natural complexity that synthetic amber simply cannot replicate. Some people pick up notes of warm wood, a gentle smokiness, and a slightly floral sweetness. Its deeply comforting and grounding, with the kind of scent profile that makes it an instant favorite in natural perfumery.
In aromatherapy, liquidambar amber oil is valued for its grounding, calming, and warming properties. Its used to ease anxiety, promote relaxation, and create a sense of emotional warmth and security. Its a wonderful oil for the evening wind-down routine, for meditation, or for any practice where you want to create a cozy, enveloping atmosphere. It also has historical use as a respiratory support oil -- the sweet balsamic aroma can help soothe and open the airways.
Amber oil from Liquidambar is prized as a base note fixative in natural perfumery. Its warm, sweet, balsamic character adds depth, sensuality, and staying power to fragrance compositions. It blends beautifully with other resins like benzoin, labdanum, and myrrh for rich oriental bases. It also harmonizes wonderfully with woods like sandalwood and cedarwood, and adds warmth to floral compositions. As a fixative, it helps anchor more volatile top notes and extend the overall life of the fragrance on the skin.
These are two completely different things that share a name. Ambergris is a waxy substance produced in the digestive system of sperm whales and has been used as a fixative in high-end perfumery for centuries but is now largely replaced by synthetic alternatives. Amber oil like EOWs liquidambar-derived product has nothing to do with whales -- it comes from plant-based resins and is entirely vegan and cruelty-free. The word amber in perfumery has evolved to describe a warm, sweet, balsamic aromatic character rather than a specific material.
