Dr. Nick Notes

Artemisia absinthium is a species of wormwood native to temperate regions of Eurasia and Northern Africa and widely naturalized in Canada and the northern United States. Wormwood is commonly known as an ingredient in the spirit Absinthe as well as some other alcoholic beverages, including bitters, vermouth, and pelinkovac. Sometimes Wormwood is confused or interchanged with a more popular Artemisia known as as Armoise (Mugwort).

Wormwood essential oil has a warm, intoxicating energy and has luster around it’s claimed psychotropic effects in Absinthe. For practical purposes, infusing this at low concentrations (0.1 – 5%) into other therapeutic formulas for it’s cleansing and purification properties are truly unique. For parasites / worms, consider using in a home diffuser or creating a synergistic therapeutic oil with Wormwood oil as one of many ingredients. We at EOW think this is a particularly interesting essential oil for purifying or shifting energies in an environment and is a great ingredient for more esoteric formulations.

Based on the safety reports I have seen with seizures and renal failures with as little / as much as 10 mL ingested, I don’t consider ingesting this one. For those that fail to take heed, immensely small doses are still outside the warranted precautions for internal ingestion. May be best for topical use in conjunction with other powerful herbs/topics used for specific purposes. Not for use in pregnancy or during breast-feeding! Note that even 5% is considered outside the safe recommended usage for direct dermal application. Anything past 0.5% should be highly considered for it’s particular usage, duration and it’s safety is not well supported.

How to Use

  • Combine into other cleansing / purifying extracts to formulate powerful esoteric creations.
  • Add highly diluted (<0.5%) to massage oils and salves to support menstruation
  • Diffuse into the environment to purify the air, for short periods of time.

Precautions

Hazards: Neurotoxicity; embryo-fetotoxicity; abortificient.

Recommended for topical usage only, especially for high beta-thujone subtypes. Recommended 0.4% maximum dermal concentration according to Essential Oil Safety Handbook. To be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding completely.
