Dr. Nick Notes
Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) is also known as the eastern teaberry, the checkerberry, the boxberry. Wintergreen is native to northeastern North America from Newfoundland west to southeastern Manitoba, and south to Alabama. Native Americans brewed teas from the leaves to alleviate rheumatic symptoms, headache, fever, sore throat, and various aches and pains.
Oil of Wintergreen contains the highly aromatic compound, methyl salicylate, which is used in aromatherapy & botanical perfumery for its sweet, refreshing, mint-like aroma. Wintergreen oil has also been used (in very small amounts), as a flavoring in products such as chewing gum, breath mints, toothpaste, & ice cream. Wintergreen essential oil is also found as a flavor ingredient in root beer.
Methyl salicylate is a medically known ingredient and proven NSAID (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug) that is also the metabolite of Acetylsalicylic acid (commonly known as Aspirin). Wintergreen extract is commonly innerstood to relieve pain and inflammation. Diluted in a carrier oil, wintergreen oil can be used topically to aid with arthritic aches & pains - Wintergreen essential oil may aid with symptoms of itching from insect bites & stings. Wintergreen oil for pain is the most widespread usage, and used safely can be a powerful ally

Do Not Use Wintergreen essential oil if you have any sensitivity to Aspirin (pharmacologically similar). Acts as an anticoagulant (blood thinner). Avoid contact with eyes and other sensitive areas.
