Tulsi is a member of the basil family (Ocimum genus) less desirable for culinary preparations with its more pungent and bitter taste. Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum | Ocimum gratissimum) or Tulsi in Ayurveda: the name Tulsi translates as “The Incomparable One”. Highly revered in Ayurvedic Medicine and is considered one of the most sacred herbs of India, along with divine “Soma” and lotus. Tulsi is so revered that she is believed to be a goddess that served humanity daily with her presence.
There are three main varieties of Tulsi used in Ayurveda: Rama Tulsi is deep green and used more for digestion ~ Krishna Tulsi is deep magenta colored, is hotter and more commonly used for its detoxifying reaction. These two chemotypes can vary substantially depending on where they are grown but are both Ocimum sanctum. The third Tulsi variety type is Vana Tulsi and is classified as Ocimum gratissimum.
When taken as medicine, Tulsi is said to expand and sharpen awareness, aid meditation, and promote compassion. Tulsi is a powerful herb on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual planes ~ said to open the heart & mind while encouraging devotion. In Ayurvedic medicine Tulsi affects the blood, plasma, marrow, nerves, and reproductive tissues. Tulsi expresses heat with tastes of pungent and bitter ~ Holy Basil helps to pacify Vata and Kapha doshas though can be to heating and imbalancing for high Pitta dosha types.
Tulsi spans to support the immune system during colds, cough, sinus congestion, headaches, arthritis, rheumatism, and fevers. Indigenous wisdom shares the febrifuge properties of Tulsi work through a process that impacts the core dynamics of the body. This helps to affect the cause or rhythmic cycle of deep, old, mysterious and periodic fevers. Some research has shown Tulsi to have positive effects in normalizing blood sugar and fat levels: In one significant placebo controlled crossover study, Tulsi was shown to reduce blood sugar levels 17.6% in diabetes patients. Holy Basil is a useful ally to counter respiratory diseases and persistent fevers.
Dr. Nick’s Notes
Tulsi seems to offer a powerful adaptogenic quality of the mind which brings a person back to center. Tulsi is very high in flavinoids and has an impressive antioxidant capacity and can be used regularly as a tonic herb for general health and well-being. Tulsi is used as a powerful expectorant to eliminate mucous in Ayurvedic herbalism, which we have seen in practice with our Spark! formulation. In India, Tulsi is grown near temples and homes where she is revered to purify the air & sanctify the environment. Other folk lore shares reverence for the way Holy Basil magnetizes prosperity into our lives and helps maintain it.
Tulsi was the first essential oil extract that I witnessed powerful subjective changes through objective data. In 2013, Dr. Juan Acosta connected my brain to an EEG and we tested the effects of several essential oils. After vaporizing some Tulsi through heat and direct inhalation into the lungs, my Alpha, Theta and Delta wave activity became more pronounced than Beta activity. A euphoria came over my body, mind relaxed and focused shortly after inhaling an amazing flavor profile like an herbaceous clove and Nutmeg with green notes. A deep relaxation, meditative-like state and a sleep-like quality with a clear focused awareness can be expected from these brain wave patterns. Quite reflective of how I experience vaporizing Tulsi or ingesting the oil as a warm tea!
Years later we are playing with sacred Tulsi herb, getting to know her through Ultrasonic Extraction. The extract is rich in it’s flavor profile, spicy and herbaceous ~ the nervous system calms down very quickly after ingestion. In fact, this seems to be more powerful as a nervine than Skullcap and I find to be very helpful for overactive thoughts before bedtime. This seems to be well enjoyed for the rich flavor profile and profound effects people experience after ingesting. Ultrasonic Tulsi is a great ally to have if you are stressed throughout the week on a regular basis or have difficulty sleeping. The tincture seems to enhance the state of presence and relax the body/mind and open me to a larger sense of awareness!
My experience with Ultrasonic Tulsi: A great ally during non-linear tasks, nature walks, relaxing experiences and other activities that are fun without many rigid detail. Also special to deepen the quality of sleep or meditation. This Ultrasonic Tincture is definitely another successful extract with it’s effects on the body-mind and rich flavor profile!
