Epimedium (Epimedium macranthum) aka Horny Goat Weed is shrub that grows in dry areas of Tibet and China. Legends for it’s common name express a shepard discovered the properties of this weed observing his billy goats’ uncontrollable sexual appetites after grazing on this herb. Epimedium is said to be an aphrodisiac, potentially boosting libido and sexual vitality in men and women.  The leaves of the plant are used to make medicine and extracts.

As many as 15 horny goat weed species are known as "yin yang huo" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that have pharmacological effects on the body, Icariin being the major active constituent.  Epimedium sp. has been documented in over 700 clinical papers / reviews on Pubmed.gov (January 22, 2019) with mentions of anti-osteoporosis, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor & vasodilatory mechanisms, with additional mentions of modulating effects on the Hypothalamus, Pituitary, Adrenal (HPA) Axis.

Icariin in Epimedium extract supplements may also improve the use of free, circulating testosterone.  Testosterone is closely connected to sexual libido, stamina, athletic abilities and can be supportive for enhanced sexual performance.  Epimedium is believed to have vasodilatory effects which may enhance blood flow, this mechanism provides enhanced stimulation into the genitals for both men & women.

Some of these effects of Horny Goat Weed supplements are attributed to its vasodilatory mechanisms. Vasodilation is the diametric widening of the inner lining (endothelium) of the lungs, heart, blood vessels and other components of the circulatory system.

Epimedium is a powerful green herb and a new plant ally in my botanical repertoire.  My first rendezvous with Horny Goat Weed was during our extraction journey where I munched on quids of the used plant powder after it dried from the filtration process.  Invigorating, slightly mood stimulating, my physical body has continued to vibe with this material as a balanced yet strongly yang tonic herb. I find for my rather balanced (masculine/feminine) emotional / body type, usually about 3-7 drops is my ideal usage taken sublingually in the AM.

This plant produces a powerful support for generalized mood and physical well-being used in moderation and should be cycled on-off for most beneficial long-term integration. My experience has been thus far: elevated mood, increased stamina & more strength during exercise, a light boost when I awaken from sleep (promotes healthy circadian rhythm?) and enhanced energy throughout the day.

With the general feeling of enhanced strength, elevated mood, increased circulation, Ultrasonic Epimedium Tincture is a powerful addition to optimizing sexual performance.  Women have reported increased arousal with it’s ingestion as well, a general sense of warmth and inner joy. Men have described a wild enhancement of arousal after consuming 1/2 - 1 dropperful under the tongue, held for 20-30 seconds. I haven’t explored this level of dosing personally ~ I can attest to even small doses enhancing sexual potency and arousal. You may choose to prepare yourself to channel any enhanced sexual vitality in a healthy way if you choose to experiment with higher concentrations!

Icariin is Epimedium species major active constituent, and has a similar Mechanism of Action (MOA) to popular, well-studied Erectile Dysfunction Drugs on the pharmaceutical market.  This works as a Phosphodiesterase Type 5 (PDE-5) Inhibitor ~ PDE-5 stops the blood from entering the corpus cavernosum. The corpus cavernosum are the tubular formations in the penis that inflate with blood to cause an erection - inhibiting these actions, causes blood to flood the corpus cavernosum erecting the penis.

In conjunction to the direct PDE-5 Inhibition, the overall plant seems to provide increased libido - there’s been correlation with Epimedium and increased free Testosterone in the body, especially in conjunction with other Jing herbs.

How to Use

• Infuse ¼ dropperful into your tea to give your morning tonic to boost your day.
• Consider using ½ dropperful - 1 dropperful 30-60 minutes before events of sexual performance.
• Take ½ dropperful one hour before exercise regiment to add a gentle boost of stamina.

Precautions

Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding! May increase the effect of energizing medications. Do not take before operating heavy machinery. Do not combine with other male stimulating drugs (ie. sildenafil & other PDE-5 inhibitors) for risk of Priaprism (prolonged erection which may damage function of male organs long term!).

Drug Interactions may occur with use of concurrent Estrogen supplements & ACE-Inhibitors.  Some anti-coagulant/anti-platelet drugs which can result in excess bleeding.

In general, in pharmaceutical PDE-5 Inhibitor Drugs, these adverse side effects should be avoided and product discontinued if any of the following are observed:

• Headaches and/or upset stomach
• Chest, face and/or neck flushing
• Nasal congestion and/or abnormal vision
• Backaches and/or muscle tenderness
• Nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea
• Ringing in the ears
• Abnormal heart beat and/or pains in the chest
• Breathing difficulties
• Swelling in the feet, legs, hands, ankles, wrists and/or gonads

Safety Summary

Ultrasonic Horny Goat Weed Tincture is not well-studied for short-term or long-term consumption.  Possible side effects may produce dizziness, aggression or irritability in excessive doses or during extended usage.  One study assessed and found safety with using an Epimedium product for 2 years though this product extract was of a different potency, extraction type and source than our Ultrasonic Epimedium Tincture.]
