Ocimum basilicum, commonly known as Sweet Basil and sometimes referred to as Saint Joseph’s Wort, is a popular culinary herb of the mint family, Lamiaceae. Basil is a Greek word βασιλεύς (basileus), which literally means king. Many types of basil are available on the culinary and aromatherapy markets ~ Sweet Basil is one of the most common basils and is surprising powerful. When combining into therapeutic formulas or culinary dishes, less Sweet Basil oil is often needed compared to what one might think.

I’ve found an interesting phenomenon that Sweet Basil may NOT easily linearly scale when designing formulas. This may be the particular extracts I’ve chosen to combine it with or perhaps the order of these additions with past recipes but this extract teaches playful mastery. When applied topically, Sweet Basil acts as a counter-irritant and may be found useful in mild cases of joint pain or arthritic inflammation. A greatly diluted formula (1%) may be massaged into the temples for headaches, to soothe the nervous system and to enhance meditative potential. Stimulating to the mind while simultaneously relaxing to the nervous system, Basil is an unspoken King of Herbs! Phenomenal to diffuse around the house or kitchen for inspiration and to uplift the spirits.

How to Use

  • Add 1 or 2 drops to food and/or fruit beverages to enhance flavor and add therapeutic effects.
  • Add to massage oils, salves, lotions, and creams to rub onto sore joints, muscles and other parts of the body.
  • Use in aromatherapy to relieve tension, stress, anxiety, and an overactive mind.
  • When used as a culinary seasoning, Sweet Basil essential oil is best added at the last moment as cooking will subdue the full flavor of this delicious herb.


May inhibit blood clotting. Must be diluted before applying topically: may cause skin irritation when used topically by sensitive individuals. Should be used in very small amounts due to its potency!
