Dr. Nick Notes

St. John’s Wort is most commonly known in the natural health community for it’s mood-lifting properties. This plant earned it’s common name from St. John the Baptist, being in full bloom on June 24th which is Saint’s Feast Day. The green shrub blooms with beautiful bright yellow flowers and sparkles in the sun.

St. John’s Wort extract boasts potent antiviral and antiseptic properties which make it great for treating minor skin wounds and rashes. John Steele once spoke about this oil’s superior skin recovery properties from cuts, moderate injuries and burns.  This plant’s powerful anti-inflammatory properties also supports sore muscles when infused into a carrier oil. Topically this is a wonderful ally for general skin health and wound recovery!

Perhaps this plant is best known for its subjective mood elevating qualities, which some people consider to effects as a potent antidepressant.  This invokes moderate mood-elevating qualities, mild digestive stimulation and mild relaxant qualities (best before bedtime) with it’s serotonergic activity.

St. John’s Wort has many drug interactions as this extract can inhibit many liver enzymes which increases other herb/drug concentrations in the body.  This can be potentially concerning for certain drugs, including other serotonergic chemicals which can cause a harmful or fatal interaction.

What Not To DO:

We only provide the 10% of this extract infused into a carrier oil as it’s very powerful and can be dangerous if used internally, incorrectly.  I once chose to experiment with limits and took about 1.2 grams of the pure CO2 extract. In an estimated 20-45 minutes, I experienced a deep quality tingling & pressure in my brain which “felt” like my head was going to explode.  After focusing on my breath and sitting down for several minutes, the intensity subsided and created a relaxing calm - this experience felt like serotonin overload in the brain and can be very dangerous!

As a result, I cannot suggest anyone to take this product internally because it is too powerful.  This is approximately 5-10x the amount anyone should use in regards to dosing. Be mindful and heartful of potential drug interactions (ie. pharmaceutical drugs, antidepressants, recreational drugs)

How to Use

  • ALWAYS avoid direct topical application in sunlight (risk for photosensitive reaction - deep sunburn)
  • Apply to minor skin wounds as an antiseptic and to aid with local recovery - already infused in carrier oil [MCT] at 10%
  • Combine into salves, lotions and massage oils ~
  • Use in aromatherapy to ease anxiety and for mood upliftment.

St. John’s Wort may cause skin photosensitization (sun sensitivity) when used internally or applied topically. Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. May cause drug interactions with antidepressant medications or other pharmaceutical drugs.  Inhibits many CYP liver enzymes which affects drug metabolism - not recommended in conjunction with other pharmaceuticals or recreational drugs!
