Essential Oils for the Winter Season

Winter time is a cozy time. A season of moments perfectly poised for scent ritual. Winter time is a time for slowing down and drinking tea near a fire. It is an internal time and also a time for gathering with friends and family. We balance being with self and being with others.  Ideas and thoughts are stirring. There is more rest and rejuvenation.  We let our ideas, thoughts, and plans gestate so we can sprout in the spring with a big stretch and begin action. All the oils shared here can be enjoyed by inhaling and diffusing or used topically diluted with a carrier oil like coconut, almond, grapeseed, etc.

Warming oils like Rosemary, Ginger, Clove, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Black Pepper, Turmeric, and Myrrh can bring much comfort, enlivening the spirit and relaxing the soul.

Rosemary:

A beautiful herb for this time; Rosemary is a plant for memory, stimulating the part of the mind that is for memory recall. If you want to enliven the mind, work with memories, or recall a loved one, you may diffuse Rosemary or use it on the body with a carrier oil.  Rosemary is also wonderful infused into your favorite hair products – try adding 0.25% to your shampoo or conditioner.

Ginger:

You can experiment with ginger by putting a few drops into a carrier oil. It is especially effective when paired with black pepper & nutmeg as a joint/muscle rub.  As a digestive aid you can infuse about 2.5% ginger oil into your favorite carrier oil and massage into the stomach.  Ginger is quite warming and when ingested or massaged into your body, Ginger oil may promote increased sweating or body temperature during the cold season.

Clove

Dilute, Dilute, Dilute; Use this potent essential oil with a carrier oil (ie. 1 drop / ounce) as a heating massage oil. Diffuse a couple drops of Clove with Blood Orange and/or Frankincense Carterii (CO2) for a heavenly combo.

Nutmeg

Nutmeg is great for inflammation or warming joints & muscles. You may dilute it appropriately for topical use and a warm tingling sensation. Try 2.5% in your favorite carrier oil or experiment with our Nutmeg Massage Oil.

Cinnamon:

Cinnamon is antimicrobial (Viral, Bacterial, Parasites, Fungal). Try putting a few drops in an ounce of honey as an appropriate dilution. This mixture is extremely anti-microbial and is said to be highly effective for cleansing candida.

Black Pepper

Black Pepper is earthy and spicy. It reduces pain, inflammation and helps to relax sore joints and muscles.  Use topically with carrier oil.  Diffuse or take a few inhalations of Black Pepper to feel uplifted and euphoric.  In the kitchen, use 1 drop of Black Pepper oil in a large pot of food for 2 people. It will kick up the flavor profile of any dish, without being overwhelming!

Turmeric

Turmeric is anti-inflammatory, has been studied to show anti-tumor qualities, and confers many other health benefits. Try using 1-3 drops in tea or salads. Combine with Ginger and Black Pepper in a massage oil, but avoid with white / light clothing or sheets which can stain!

Myrrh

Myrrh is antimicrobial (viral, fungal), deliciously rich and has an earthy sweet syrupy aroma. Diffuse it or adorn yourself with Myrrh topically. Myrrh makes a great base in diffusing or wearing with other essential oil blends.  Can be applied topically on irritated skin or infections

Other Holiday delights we love include Sweet Marjoram, Himalayan Cedar, Blood Orange, Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood, Frankincense Sacra, Vetiver, Juniper, and Cardamom.

Please take care with diffusing indoors with cats and dogs.  They don’t have the liver enzymes needed to process the compounds found in these oils: Clove, Cinnamon, Tea Tree, and Peppermint. Oregano and Thyme also contain phenolic compounds and should be avoided around your pets.  Please be mindful with using & enjoying these potent allies.

We hope you may include essential oils in your winter rest and holidays; our team at Essential Oil Wizardry wishes you a cozy, nourishing, and love filled season.
